Sur Nutrition is an American company that produces plant-based supplements and nutrition products.[1] Founded in 2017, the company operates under the domain name sur.co and is primarily known for its performance-oriented formulations marketed toward endurance athletes.[1]

History

Sur Nutrition was founded in 2017. Throughout its early years, the company designed plant-based supplements for endurance consumers and active users, focusing on performance and clean ingredient formulations.[2] In June 2025, the company introduced its Organic Meal Replacement Shake at The Running Event trade show in Austin, Texas. The introduction marked a significant milestone in expanding its product line from supplements to full meal replacements.[2]

The company initially launched AltRed in 2017 under the name Sur PhytoPerformance.[3] AltRed is a phytonutrient supplement that uses a patented technology to isolate betalain compounds from beet pigment, "unleashing" these unique phytonutrients from their natural nitrate and sugar matrix.[4] Independently conducted clinical studies at the University of California, Davis, showed statistically significant improvements in endurance performance and recovery markers including heart rate and perceived effort in runners and triathletes using AltRed.[4]

The Van Drunen family, who founded the company, have seven generations of farming experience covering over 1,500 acres of Midwest farmland.[1] AltRed carries third-party certifications from NSF[5] and Informed-Choice Trusted by Sport, guaranteeing its safety and freedom from banned substances for athletes.[6]

Business model

Sur Nutrition produces and sells plant-based nutritionals. In 2025, the company introduced the Organic Meal Replacement Shake, which trade publications stated had 23 grams of protein, 12 grams of fiber, two servings of fruit and vegetables, and antioxidant-based ingredients.[1] The product uses North American–grown PURIS pea protein, and its fiber blend, marketed as NatureKnit, includes apple, carrot, blueberry, cranberry, and spinach fibers.[1]

The company has also integrated athlete endorsement into their campaigns. Marathon runner Albertson, known for holding the 50 km world best, was quoted in press coverage praising the product’s taste and nutritional profile.[2]

Awards and recognition

In 2025 during its launching, the Organic Meal Replacement Shake received a New Product Showcase Award at The Running Event held in Austin, Texas.[2]

Regulatory context

As a dietary supplement company operating in the United States, Sur Nutrition’s products fall under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).[7] Under this framework, supplements are not pre-approved by the [h ttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Food_and_Drug_AdministrationU.S. Food and Drug Administration] (FDA) for safety or effectiveness before marketing.[7] Independent analyses of the supplement sector have noted widespread issues of quality and adverse effects across the industry, underscoring the importance of third-party verification.[8]
