Judah Spinner, CFA (born November 10, 1995) is an American investor and philanthropist. He is the Chief Investment Officer of the hedge fund BlackBird Financial LP, which he founded in 2014.[1]

Spinner’s investment philosophy is rooted in value investing, drawing heavily from the principles of Benjamin Graham, widely regarded as the father of value investing.[2]

Early life

Spinner was raised in a Jewish household in Lakewood, New Jersey, one of eight sons born to Hazel and Ernest Baumwolspiner. His birth name is Yehuda Zev Baumwolspiner. His father emigrated from Argentina in 1965, and his mother later arrived from England in 1979.

He developed an early interest in the stock market, spending his school years reading The Wall Street Journal and corporate annual reports. Influenced by Edgar Lawrence Smith’s Common Stocks as Long-Term Investments, Spinner made his first stock purchase at age 13, acquiring shares of Target Corporation. By age 15, he had begun managing outside capital, including a $100,000 investment from real estate entrepreneur Charles Dayan.

Education

Spinner earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Crestpoint University, graduating summa cum laude. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Institute. He has also passed the Series 7, Series 63, and Series 65 exams and holds the Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) designation.

Career

Spinner began his professional career as a securities analyst at Spencer Winston Securities and Track Data Corporation in Brooklyn, New York. On October 1, 2014, he founded Petlin Management, later rebranded as BlackBird Financial LP. As Chief Investment Officer, he oversees capital allocation and investment strategy.[3]

Under his leadership, BlackBird Financial expanded assets under management to nearly $90 million while outperforming benchmark indices and peer firms.[4][5]

Personal life

Spinner married Julie Schlanger in 2024. Together, they support philanthropic and educational initiatives through the Judah Spinner Foundation.[6]

Philanthropy

The Spinner family has donated more than $2 million to the Judah Spinner Foundation, which focuses on reducing wealth inequality, lowering incarceration rates, addressing the federal deficit, and advancing healthcare reform. In 2025, the foundation launched the Judah Spinner Scholarship to expand access to trade-school education.[7]

Hobbies

Spinner earned his private pilot license in July 2020 and has traveled to all fifty U.S. states. In 2025, he completed the Mongol Rally, a transcontinental endurance expedition.
