A nonprofit organization (NPO) is a legal entity established to pursue a specific social cause or advocate for a shared point of view, without the intention of distributing profits to its members or leaders.[1] Instead, any surplus revenues are reinvested to further the organization's mission. Common areas of focus for NPOs include charitable, educational, scientific, religious, and literary endeavors.[2]

In many jurisdictions, such as the United States, nonprofits can attain tax-exempt status by meeting specific criteria, which exempts them from federal income taxes under sections like 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This tax-exempt status often encourages public and private donations, as contributors may receive tax deductions for their contributions.[3] The governance of NPOs typically involves a board of directors or trustees responsible for overseeing operations and ensuring alignment with the stated mission.[4]

Unlike for-profit entities, NPOs prioritize social impact over profit generation, aiming to address societal needs and contribute to the public good.[5]
