The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain) is a country located off the northwestern coast of mainland Europe. It comprises four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. History

The history of the UK stretches back thousands of years, with prehistoric settlements, Roman occupation, and the rise of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The unification of England, Scotland, and Wales into the Kingdom of Great Britain occurred in 1707 through the Acts of Union. In 1801, Ireland joined, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.[2]
