Facebook Messenger is a free instant messaging (IM) app and platform developed by Meta Platforms. Initially released in 2011, Messenger evolved from Facebook's in-app messaging feature into a standalone application. It allows users to send text messages, voice messages, photos, videos, and files, as well as make voice and video calls. Messenger is available on iOS, Android, and desktop platforms.
History
Messenger originated as Facebook Chat in 2008. In 2011, Facebook revamped the service and launched it as a standalone app named Messenger.[1]
Messenger introduced several features over the years, including group chats, stickers, and integrations with other apps. In 2014, Facebook separated Messenger from the main Facebook app, requiring users to download it as a separate application.[2]
Features
Messaging and Media Sharing
Messenger enables users to send text messages, voice recordings, photos, videos, and other multimedia files. The app supports group chats with enhanced management tools such as polls and mentions.
Voice and Video Calls
Messenger offers free voice and video calling over the internet. Group video calls can include up to 50 participants using the Messenger Rooms feature.[3]
End-to-End Encryption
The app began rolling out end-to-end encryption for its messaging services in 2016, providing additional security for private conversations.[4]
Integration with Other Platforms
Messenger integrates with Facebook, Instagram, and Portal devices. It allows cross-platform messaging between Facebook and Instagram users.[5]
Privacy and Controversies
Messenger has faced criticism for its data collection practices and lack of default encryption for all chats. These concerns have led to increased scrutiny and regulatory investigations in several regions.[6]
Global Reach
As of 2024, Facebook Messenger has over 1.3 billion monthly active users worldwide, making it one of the most popular messaging apps globally.[7]
