The President of Bangladesh is the head of state of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.[1] The office of the President is largely ceremonial, with the executive powers primarily residing in the office of the Prime Minister. The President is elected by the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) for a five-year term and can be re-elected for a second term.[2]
Overview
Since the country's independence in 1971, the office of the President has evolved from a more powerful executive role to a ceremonial one, with the real power held by the Prime Minister.[3] The President is the constitutional custodian of state functions, such as appointing the Prime Minister, granting pardons, and representing the country in state functions and international diplomacy. The President also performs several key ceremonial roles and oversees important state decisions.[4]
